Disclaimer:
All quoted prices prior to grooming your pet are only estimates. Final price will depend on temperament of each pet, and the condition of its coat. Upon physical inspection of your pet, a good faith estimated price will be provided. Extra charges may apply for pets that are matted, have fleas and/or difficult to manage. Often, we are not aware of these extra charges until I have begun the grooming process, because of this the price originally quoted at drop off could increase.
About me:
Welcome to Petts & Paws Grooming! My name is Sarah Petters, and I’m the proud owner of this dog grooming business, which I started in September 2023. At just 23 years old, I’ve combined my lifelong love for animals with my passion for grooming to create a welcoming space for your furry friends. I live on a farm with about 50 Tennessee fainting goats —they faint when they get excited or scared, providing endless entertainment!. My journey into the animal world began with my childhood dog, Oliver, who passed away last year. He was my first true companion and the reason I fell in love with dogs. I initially set out to become a vet tech, enrolling in the veterinary nursing program at Camden County College. However, while working at PetSmart Grooming as a dog bather, I discovered my true passion: making dogs look and feel their best. Grooming allows me to connect with pets in a way that brings joy to both them and their owners. I’m dedicated to providing a calm, one-on-one grooming experience that ensures your dog feels loved and pampered. Thank you for visiting my site! I can’t wait to meet you and your furry companions.

The name "Petts" in "Petts & Paws Grooming" is a playful twist inspired by my last name, Petters. I wanted to create a unique identity for my grooming business that reflects my personal touch while still being memorable.

The dog featured is my childhood dog named Oliver, who sadly passed away in May 2023 at the age of 13. He was a beloved part of my life since I was in third grade, and he truly ignited my passion for dogs. His unconditional love inspired me to start this grooming business. Having him represented in our logo is a tribute to the joy and warmth he brought to my life. Thank you for helping me keep his memory alive! -
Matting Education:
Why did my dog get shaved?
No your groomer did not shave your dog because they were lazy! When your dog is matted the clipper needs to get in between the mat and the skin. The shorter the blade, the easier it is to get the mats out. Trying to brush and gets mats out is extremely painful for your dog. It can cause brush burn or bruising. The most humane way to get matts out is shaving.
I brushed my dog why are they matted?
It is very important to make sure to brush in all the right places. The most important spots to brush are around the neck, ears, armpits, legs, and tail. Those are the spots that get mats the most. A lot of the time pet parents say they brushed their dog. When in actuality, they only brushed the top of the hair, didn’t brush down to the skin, and missed the most important spots to brush. The most effective way to brush your dog is by line-brushing with a slicker brush and then checking your work with a greyhound comb.
Heres a link to a youtube tutorial on line-brushing.
Whats some risks with matting?
Mats can be very dangerous. Mats cut off the air flow in your dog's hair and can trap moisture, which can cause irritation and sores on your dog. Even mild matting can be painful, but in severe cases, matting can cut off circulation to your dog's skin. Grooming a dog with mats puts that pet at a higher risk for getting clipper burn, nicks/cuts and even a Hematoma. Therefore, we stress the importance of regular grooming. It is the pet parent responsibility to properly brush/comb their pets’ hair regularly (same as if you would care for your own hair daily).
Why do I get charged extra for matting?
It is the pet parents responsibility to prevent matting by brushing. When a dog comes in matted it requires extra time and patience with getting those mats out. It also is very hard on my tools and equipment. It dulls my tools faster than a regular haircut would.
Puppy Education
I Just got my puppy how can I prepare them for grooming?
Puppies should start getting prepared for grooming as soon as possible! They will be regularly groomed for the rest of their lives, it is important to prepare so grooming is always a great experience for them. What you can do at home to desensitize them is touching and holding their ears, paws, chin, and legs. A trick I tell pet parents is getting an electric toothbrush and running it over their face, body, and feet. What this does is mimic a clipper. Something else I recommend is turning on your hair dryer at home to get them used to the sound. As a puppy owner this is your homework:
Electric Toothbrush- 5 mins 2x a day
Brush and comb- 2 mins a day unless long hair is desired or its a large breed dog
Hair dryer- 5 mins 2x a day
Surface- choose a surface like a table, countertop, or washing machine to do this everyday.
All exercises should spend special care focusing on face, nose bridge, around and under ears, feet, and in between toes, and bum areas.
Preparing and desensitizing your puppy at their young age will make grooming less-stressful and will set them up for success!
How often should I bring my puppy in?
Puppies should be brought in as soon as they receive their first round of shots. It is recommended to keep them on a 2-4 week schedule. Doing this I can then bond with them and train them for grooming. This is also why doing your homework as a pet parent is very important. Lets be real: 1-2 hours a month is not enough time to produce a robust, well-rounded dog.
When can my puppy get their first haircut?
For the first few visits with your puppy I like to do whats called a puppy trim. This is a bath, blow dry, nail trim, and a feet, eye, and sanitary trim. I will need to do this until I believe your puppy is comfortable with grooming. Putting clippers on a puppy that is not ready can be dangerous and stressful. It is important to set your pup up for success!
